Lesson Summary and Take-Aways 3/18/15

Take-Aways:
  • Lion breath.
  • Heart forward and up.

[i e a o u o a e i] On chromatic scale down and up, one vowel for each pitch.
-Crescendo on descending, decrescendo on ascending.
-use a [k] (repeated) to loosen the tongue on the onset.
-be careful on the decrescendo; tongue wants to stiffen.
-top teeth can also show a bit in the process.

[a-ka- ko] 1-1-8531.
-there is no change in the mouth/tongue as you go up.
[kakakaka ko--] 88888-5-3-1.
-Independence of tongue and jaw.
-Use the [a] to prevent tongue narrowing/transverse muscles from tightening.
-tongue isn't changing the vowel, the space above it is changing for the vowel. More full-body approach to vowels.
-don't use too much voice on the [kakaka]. Lighter.

[mi si mi] 54321.
-sneezy breath.
-have "drooling face" as well
-lips/cheeks soft. Establish soft face then breathe sneeze through it.
-"Put your moron on, then sneezy breathe."
-minimal movement for [m] and especially [s].

[zi zi zi] 12345432-12345432-13587542-13587542-135875421.
-primary objective: sound never moves back in the mouth.
-If everything is how it should be (loose face, sneezy breath, etc.), then pitch should just be a thought.
-Nothing should really change for a new note/vowel.
-When back pharyngeal wall comes forward: just direct the sound backwards.
-if you notice error, go back and fix it and make adjustments (i.e. changing vowel to [e] on ascension)

ADDRESSING INSTABILITY OF BREATH:
Lion Breathing:
-interlace fingers behind you. Shoulders down and close to the spine.
-sternum is up, but think "heart forward and up"
-Breathe out [ha], tongue slightly out of mouth.
-Any "air" sound is from proximity of tongue arch to top of mouth.

-Apply generosity of air from the above exercise to everything! Let your voice be a valve.

"The Cherry Tree"
-go through the piece with that same "whisper/lion breath" and apply it to singing.
-the tongue shouldn't change for different notes/vowels.
-Generosity of breath.

"O quand je dors"
-same dealio.
