Sang in Voice Recital Hour today. I hadn't sung prior to my performance, so I felt a little bogged down by the weight of my own voice; I couldn't really find the space that I wanted. I feel like my voice has a film over it; like I'm singing through a wall of mucus or something.
Asked Venicia what I could work on, and she informed me that I tend to "jaw" my [a] and [o] vowels, which made sense. I caught myself throwing my jaw down for those vowels instead of letting them permeate a higher space. So when I went to go practice, I experimented with thinking "jelly jaw" every time I went to go sing a vowel where I tend to tighten/jam down my jaw. I think it worked pretty well, actually.
I went to my practice room and followed along with the 2/11/15 lesson recording. Thought a lot about having that "rectangle" space in the back of my mouth, and that gave me some pretty immediate results. My soft palate was just being lazy. Incorporated what I knew about lion breathing as well, and that helped me with vibrato stability.
Reminded myself that as I descend in pitch not to get lazy (pfftt grammar..).
Still feel that film on my voice... Did some panting to see if that would help. I mostly mimed the action and then did "sing" on 54321, being generous with my breath and not paying attention to what my sound was. Plugged my ears a couple times so I could get out of my own way.
I'm trying to work on being generous with my breath instead of pushing with my breath.
Took me about 30 minutes, but I found my way out of the weird mucus place thing. Did lots of high vowels and maintaining the forwardness of the vowel.
