Practice 2/25/16

Beginning last night (around 8 ish), I started to feel severely dry in the area of my glottis (an isolated sensation), and I'm not quite sure if it was reflux. It could very well have been, because the sensation is a little similar. I woke up with the same feeling, but a little less intense. There's definitely quite a bit of swelling, but it's not super uncomfortable. Just really dry/phlegm-y feeling. (Looks like I'll be having throat-coat and apples for breakfast today....)

Started vocalizing around 8:20 a.m.
  • Gentle/low vocalizes, but focusing on precise onsets. "bop bop" or "li le la lo"
    • "haaaaah" fogging up window throat.
    • offsets are done with gesture of inhale to re-cue the open throat.
    • "nasal dilation"
    • Stay high as you descend
  • If vibrato gets "wobbly" or low, just think more nasal.
  • "nim nem nam nom num" allow vibrato. Not completely straight, and watch that you don't get shallow.
    • Fat tongue
    • Steeple-sensation inside. Point inside the brain. Approach from above.
  • FOCUS ON THE GOOD, TOO.
  • When descending, don't push for depth. Just let the pitch drop while maintaining height.
  • "speed" on slow 54321, Wait behind the "p" and approach from above, maintaing "haaaaaah" concept in throat and upper pharynx as well.
    • This became "spaaaaayahh" 8-7654321, with the same concepts.
    • By the end of this exercise, I could, with relative comfort, sing A5.
By 8:45 a.m., I felt really good vocally, despite how gross I felt in the beginning. Still feel dry, but I know I can sing around it, so it's not so bad. Still going to take it pretty easy today.

It's so exciting to end up in a good place on a bad day. It inspires a lot of confidence that you can really do this almost any day, no matter where you began with your voice that day.
