Lesson Summary 3/4/15

[mmm] 54321, going down by half step. Then 123454321 ascending by half step. Don't depress the tongue as you go up; let the tongue touch the roof of your mouth. Think of keeping the buzz coming out of your forehead.

[mi me ma mo mu] 54321, ascending by half step.

[a o u o a] 12345678987654321. Ascending by half step.

"bella sinora" 1358531. Focus on the [i] and the "n." "Keep the voice resonating forward in the face."

Cruda sorte!
The needs to be brighter/more Italianate. We worked on brightening all of my vowels. [ae].
Think of a purer [u]. "More bright"
Make each embellishment your own. With cadenzas, suspend/emphasize dissonance.
When the tempo gets fast, focus your consonants.
We worked on the end difficult section (you know the one). Thomas told me to do a sort of wobble exercise on that area. Watch that you don't change your breath pressure He also showed me a sort of gliding exercise to do on the passage so that "the voice is on the entire time" with no change in breath pressure for each note. Also watch the rate of your vibrato; either sing it straight tone or match the rate of your vibrato to the movement of the notes. Embrace the "wobbling out of control" feeling.

Ouvre ton coeur
Tell a story as you're singing.
At this point in the lesson, I described a small "glottal scrape" sensation that I was getting as I was singing; it felt "abrasive" especially on my open vowels, mostly on [a]. It felt like I was pushing, but I wasn't necessarily feeling fatigue, but I could feel something like tension? Something was more "active" in the back of my mouth. It was weird.
Modify all vowels to [i].
Don't think about passaggio. Passaggio is like trajectory; the breath is high and forward. That's it.
Something about the way he was having me singing made me feel uncomfortable in the way that it felt like I was having to work harder to produce the sound that I was getting than I had to before, so I got a little worried.
So he told me to think of more height in the voice. Everything is all one voice. It's all breath to bone.
