Practice 10/31/14

Happy Halloween!

I started out really gently with my voice today; I woke up with some wicked acid reflux, so my voice felt a bit dry.

I worked on that [i] exercise that Cindy mentioned in my lesson yesterday, and I never realized how much I have to adjust in order to get the high notes, so I definitely worked on changing that.

I was having trouble with the higher notes in my vocalizes, and then I realized that I was pushing for volume/sound (again), and when I stopped doing that, there was much more release. I don't know about the volume, but it just felt much better.

I could also feel that my tongue had a tendency to tighten up as I went higher, and I noticed that I tried to fix that by opening my mouth wider (which obviously didn't work), so I sang with a small mouth and slowly worked my way back to a wider mouth, keeping a released jaw, maintaining "mask breathing," and thinking "fat tongue."

It wasn't until I had about 10 minutes left in my practice session that I started to really release, but it's still a good thing because sometimes I give up just a couple minutes too fast; if I just insist on it for long enough, I'm sure release is bound to happen. It just might take an hour or so.

Doing "bop" and adding sound in between with that same released onset really helped too.
