I've been struggling (what's new), but when I stopped to really think about what my problems were, they weren't tension or grabbing problems in the voice. It finally sunk in that I was just having resonance issues--Cindy had already told me that in my lesson, but it didn't really mean anything until today.
I spent my time in my practice room playing around with my vowels, and I noticed that when I got the correct vowel, my problems went away and the sound blossomed out. Eventually, I was able to find my way into a place where most of my vowels were in the same general area so I didn't have to change much to sing them and the resonance was consistent and buzzy.
I took extra care on schwa's and gave them brighter "flavors" so I wouldn't depress the tongue. I thought about what Mandy said in choir (quoted from Liz Tait): "The vowels are just leaking out of the ears as you sing them."
I also noticed the feeling of a "cathedral" in the mouth; I felt two "pillar-like" sensations just behind my back molars, in two very specific areas in the mouth.
I didn't think about positioning my mouth in any particular way (except some thought on "lower jaw" going back and behind the upper molars....) and it all just happened naturally. Same with breathing; I sort of thought about having a raised sternum, and breathing/stability was so much easier.
