- Feel a sense of up/down when inhaling (a "dilation" in the nose, and grounding in the breath gesture).
- It's not about making or space; it's about getting the feeling that the windpipe is open.
- Breath passageway is dilated
- Feeling nothing in the mouth or throat. Sensation is above.
- Pause to set up and approach from above using the consonants
- NO push on front of the jaw. Just let it drop!!!
- Maintain the same shape: "Like this." Don't let vowel changes be so dramatic.
- Be happy with the journey.
Practice:
- Take your time.
- Let the sound out, but don't punt the air.
- Be aware of open nasal cavity. (Watch for de-nasalized consonants....)
- I realized that when I descend, I tend to change the shape of the vowel a little too much (I drop too low to compensate for pitch), so I'm trying to maintain height even as I descend.
- This makes returning high easier as well.... Same with decrescendos...
- Maintain this through the breaths (sing in the gesture of the inhale and breathe into your singing space).
- Don't worry so much about "being loud." Or about "making" depth. That will come with the sound naturally....

ReplyDeleteGood notes. I am sure you have noticed at the Milena Kitic and Renee Fleming concerts that pushing your jaw down just does not result in good placement. It doesn't mean that the mouth opening never increases, it just means that the opening up has much more sense of opening UP and never opening DOWN
