Practice 2/24/16

Last night, I had a rehearsal with Dallas, and I somehow got to a really good place in my voice that didn't exhaust me by the end of my entire recital repertoire. It felt high and forward, and it was easy to ascend. It was probably from the nasal-to-not exercises I tried beforehand, and that helped trigger something nice.

Today, I woke up with this weird dryness/swelling in my nasal cavity/soft palate area. But as the day went by (I also consumed some warm drinks), the swelling and discomfort went away. Had some obvious acid reflux as well. Voice feels a little dry as a result.

*Focus on the good*

  • "haaaaaahhhhh" breath 54321
  • Stay high even on low; don't throw away pitch as you descend.
  • Allow low notes to glide out. Don't push for depth.
  • Nasal to non-nasal transitions (Venicia)
  • "sh" for breath+pitch onset precision.
  • Tongue is super fat and released. Think "up and over" for pitch.
  • Watch standing position: sternum up, hips released.
  • "si" 123454321.
    • "like this":
    • *****imagine open pharynx space even on closed vowels.
  • Return to "haaaya." Don't machine-gun it.
  • Approach the middle voice from above, and maintain that forward presence as you descend.
  • Panting exercises for closed vowel practice.

Micro, silent nose panting is often a good strategy between phrases rather than a big breath if you feel like things are sticky or closing down. Tends to reduce adduction effort of vocal folds AND releases constriction in nasopharynx.
