Practice 10/24/16

Listen to Lesson 10/7/16

  • Really feel the "lid" on the breath.
  • Anything below the upper teeth shouldn't be helping! Sound is above that!
  • "You're not going to lose your lid if you start with a good sound."
Also followed along to Lesson 10/14/16.

I'm getting back into that mode where everything feels effortful; like anything above an A4 is just difficult. It's hard to explain. It feels like I'm shouting all the time, and I don't know how to find resonance without that shouting feeling. That being said, it's exhausting on my body and on my voice, but I get stuck in these ruts where that's all I feel like I can do.

I can't tell if my feelings of inadequacy stem from my voice behaving this way, or if it's the other way around. There just seems to be a correlation, and it's getting a little tiring.

  1. Start with more internal smile and do more sigh-like exercises when warming up. Imagine that sound exits through eyes and that mouth is unimportant. Allow nasal cavity and nostrils to feel wide open (empty headed breath) as you inhale. Prepare the space you want the sound to reside in: ABOVE THE ROOF OF THE MOUTH, rather than your mouth and throat. Try the pencil trick, singing with pencil between teeth. Remember to smile more during the day. Those would be the first things that I can think of.
