Practice 5/13/16

So, funny story. You know how I said I felt those "strep-like" symptoms? Went to the doctors yesterday and was diagnosed with tonsillitis! How exciting! So I'm on antibiotics right now.

Even though my tonsils feel a little gross, I'm still up for singing today because everything else feels fine. My voice is working well, except for the excessive amount of thick mucus that occasionally gets stuck down there.

Since getting back from school, I've been struggling with finding the release necessary to get the sound into the "high" "mask" area. My vibrato is getting a little invasive again. So I looked back at some old practice logs to see what could be helpful.

  • "nam nem nim nom num"
  • open throat lip trills
  • opposites for vowels
After ~15 minutes of warm up, I decided the best thing I could do was to just move on to rep to see if that would help me release.
  • No physical excursion for vowel changes, but all mental when thinking opposites.
  • My sound is a little "edgy"? and not as "soft" as I would like it, but it doesn't feel bad.
    • In fact, the sound is pretty consistent and my throat doesn't feel like it's squeezing (in a way that I can detect so far). The sound is more like more focused than I'm used to, perhaps?? I don't know.
    • But I'm just going to go by sensation, and my sensation tells me that I'm not hurting anything.... So I guess that's okay for now??

  1. I would say it is fine to practice as long as you are just inviting the voice to respond and not demanding any particular result other than freedom
